  • Business Web Transaction Processing
  • Complex business transactions made on the internet, involving multiple commercial parties
  • Coordinating the low-level operations of commit, cancel, retry, and compensate (undo / reverse) in order to ensure business-level transaction integrity
Certificate Authority
  • A company that issues digital certificates
Commerce Server
  • Responsible for product display, online ordering, and inventory management
  • Works with online payment systems to process payments
Cookies
  • Information is stored in a text file on the client computer and uploaded to the relevant web server every time the web browser requests a page
  • Useful for identifying users and customizing web pages

Digital cash
  • Digital cash has a unique ID number, issued by a bank, that represents a specified sum of real money
  • In a digital cash transaction, the ID number is removed from one computer and added to another
  • Digital cash is anonymous and reusable
Digital certificates
  • An attachment to an electronic message used for security purposes
  • Useful for verifying that a user sending a message is who they claim to be, and providing the receiver with a way to encode a reply
  • Digital certificates are issued by a Certificate Authority (CA), containing the applicant's public key and identification information
  • The recipient of an encrypted message uses the CA's public key to decode and verify the digital certificate attached to the message, and obtains the sender's public key and identification information from the certificate. Using he sender's public key, the recipient can send an encrypted reply
Digital wallet
  • Encrypts and stores a user's payment information, a digital certificate to identify the user, and shipping information to speed transactions
  • Allows the user to pay by digital cash or check
  • Protects merchants against fraud
  • Wallets commonly reside on the user's PC
  • "Thin" wallets reside on the credit card issuer's server
EBPP
  • Electronic Bill Presentment and Payment
  • The process by which companies bill customers and receive payments electronically over the Internet

Direct model
  • A biller delivers the bill to customers using its own website or a third-party's website
Consolidator model
  • Bills from multiple billers are delivered to a single website and presented together to the consumer
EDI
  • Electronic Data Interchange
  • The transfer of data between different companies using networks, such as the Internet
ERP
  • Enterprise Resource Planning
  • A business management system covering the different aspects of a business, including planning, manufacturing, sales, and marketing
  • Software is used for such business activities as inventory control, order tracking, customer service, finance, and human resources
NetCheque
  • Registered users write checks to other registered users through e-mail or other network protocols
  • When a check is deposited, it authorizes the transfer of funds from the issuer's account to the receiver's account
  • All information is kept on a netcheque server, which is responsible for keeping accounts for customers, approving payments, and making the necessary changes in client accounts
  • Netcheque uses Kerberos for signature authentication, and uses conventional cryptography, not public key cryptography.
OLTP (Online Transaction Processing)
  • Simple business transactions made on the internet, involving a single commercial party
  • Making banking transactions online, purchasing a product from a consumer Web site, etc.

SET (Secure Electronic Transaction)
  • Enables secure credit card transactions on the Internet
  • Merchants verify the identity of the buyers using digital signatures
  • Buyers are able to provide their credit card number to the credit card issuer for verification and billing without the merchant being able to see the number
Shopping Cart
  • Software for selecting and ordering products from an online catalog
  • Allows consumers to select merchandise; review what they have selected; make necessary modifications or additions; and purchase the merchandise
S-Mime
  • Secure MIME
  • A version of the MIME protocol that supports encryption of messages
  • Based on RSA public-key encryption
S-HTTP
  • Secure HTTP
  • A protocol for sending individual messages through the internet
SSL
  • Secure Sockets Layer
  • Creates a secure connection between a client and a server, over which any amount of data can be sent securely
  • Data is encrypted using a private key
  • Commonly, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https:// instead of http://
Smart card
  • An electronic card (the size of a credit card) containing electronic memory, and possibly an embedded integrated circuit (IC)
  • ICC (Integrated Circuit Card): A smart card containing an integrated circuit
  • Useful for storing digital cash, generating network IDs, storing a patient's medical records, etc.
  • The card is inserted into a smart card reader, which accesses the data on the card, and adds or removes data as needed
XAML
  • Transaction Authority Markup Language
  • Used for coordinating and processing online business transactions
  • Uses a set of XML message formats and interaction models to provide business-level transactions that span multiple parties across the internet
  • Distinguishes simple business transactions (Online Transaction Processing) from complex, multi-party ones (Business Web Transaction Processing)
